Episode: Connections: The Kinks on vinyl in mono, plus new and vintage music

Dec 16, 2016 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Includes an in depth exploration of the new 10 album vinyl box set by The Kinks: The Mono Collection, plus new and vintage music by Suzanne Vega, Bob Dylan, Sam Phillips, Steve Addabbo, Maria Taylor, The Yardbirds, The Beatles, Jenny O., Leonard Cohen, Elliott Randall, Julie London, Nice As F**k, Booker T and The MG's, Merry Go Round, The Outsiders, The Dell-Vetts, Mojo Mancini, Joe Jones, Emma Swift, Iggy Pop with David Bowie, Hank Ballard, The Mar-Keys, The Squeaky Chairs and whatever append in the moment.

In the 1960's, most records by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys and many others were mixed in mono. Stereo was an afterthought, often seen as a gimmick that few would hear. The artists, the producers and the engineers focused on making the best possible mix in mono, getting the eq and the balances between instruments and vocals exactly the way they wanted it. Sometimes, the stereo mixes were done weeks or months later, after everyone had forgotten some of the subtleties and feel of the original mix. Often, less time was spent on the stereo mix.

This new release by The Kinks sounds fantastic! Lovingly mastered, with great packaging and original liner notes, this is the way this music was originally meant to be heard!

Thanks for tuning in!
