Episode: Connections... The Beatles In Mono, Part 2
30 minute, 6 song segment on The Beatles in mono and why it's important.
Starts off with Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, a completely different mix than the stereo version. More phlanging, bigger drums in the transition, different vocal sound: Magnificent! Followed by different mixes of Long, Long, Long, Cry Baby Cry, You Like Me Too Much, Baby You're A Rich Man and Magical Mystery Tour (in mono, then stereo).
To me, these mixes have a deeper presence, especially in the bass and drums. The vocals are more defined. The guitars are more clear. That said, Magical Mystery Tour may sound better in stereo, yet the mono version is different and totally valid on it's own terms. White album mixes are extremely different in some cases... not better or worse, just different.
In many cases, this is the way The Beatles and George Martin meant much of this music to be heard. Prior to last week, it had never been released on cd.
See what you think...
