Episode: Connections: Beatles/Dylan in Mono Part 2 and more...
July 11, 2011 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Starts with The Beatles and Bob Dylan in Mono Part 2, with an extended segment of mono mixes, before going on to eclectic new and vintage music.
Until the late 1960's, monaural one channel mixes were the primary focus of producers and engineers. Stereo was an afterthought. In the cd era, many listeners lost sight of the phenomenal audio quality of mono mixes of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. There's an intimacy to these mixes that lets you hear what these artists intended, as if you're right there in the studio next to them. In some cases, the differences are subtle. There's more warmth or presence, and better tone on the instruments. In other cases, there are guitar parts or effects that are not on the stereo mixes. This segment explores both.
After that, there's new music by Et Tu Bruce, a great new band out of England. Plus Matthew Dear, Superhumanoids, The Zombies, Brian Eno, Mike Viola, Joseph Arthur, Gillian Welch, Iggy Pop, Rickie Lee Jones, The Section Quartet, Bo Diddley, The Beach Boys, Silver Apples, David Bowie, Reperata & The Delrons, The Rolling Stones, John Hartford, Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr and more.
Also new music from the brilliant Elliott Randall, with HeartStrings, his new cd... available in pristine audio quality at elliott-randall.com. He says the cd is the best way to hear it...
Plus, the rare first demo of We Gotta Get Out Of This Place from songwriter Barry Mann, along with an Elvis Costello demo, a new version of She's Not There by Neko Case and Nick Cave, along with great instrumentals from Jewels and Binoculars, including their wonderful interpretation of Visions Of Johanna.
Also an excerpt of an interview with Sam Phillips talking about So Glad You're Here, from her terrific new cd, Solid State.
Thanks for tuning in. See you next time...
