Episode: "DJ for a Day": Charlie Karp on Radio Base Camp-Late Night
Charlie Karp: “DJ for a Day” on Radio Base Camp-Late Night on WPKN 89.5FM in Bridgeport, CT
Hosted by Steve di Costanzo
Charlie Karp is a brilliant yet exceedingly humble musician, songwriter, singer and monster guitarist. At the age of 16 he got an accelerated start in the world of rock. Tune in and catch Charlie as he spins some music picked just for tonight’s special Radio Base Camp-Late Night segment… and the stories are just as vital!
Here are a few items discussed: Albert Collins played a right-handed guitar, left-handed, and upside down with the guitar strings reversed; at age 16 his first project was with Buddy Miles to record on the “Them Changes” album; a few “on-the-road’ stories about hanging out with Jimi Hendrix; a little known fact that Charlie played guitar at Hendrix’ funeral with a ‘combo’ that consisted of Buddy Miles, Miles Davis, Johnny Winter, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell; writing a song below at age 16 (see below) and having it recorded on “Them Changes” album; getting hooked up with the great Arthur Lee (the band Love) and playing on the Vindicator album. Charlie tells some amusing stories about Arthur Lee like the time he was there with the GTO’s and there was a fluorescent light tube-flinging event. We missed talking about his 70’s project White Chocolate but will have to get to that in Part 2! Karp is now playing in the band Slo-Leak.

Show: Radio Base Camp-Late Night
Hosted by Steve di Costanzo, this 'late night' companion to Radio Base Camp hits some familiar genres of music from the early 1960's to the mid-70's such as psychedelic, surf, rock, garage, mod, folk and beyond. The "late night" allows for a bit more latitiude, longer tracks, less FCC oversight and keeps my night owls and day trippers entertained.
Show Dates/Times: 2nd and 4th Monday Nights from 11pm to 2:00am
** MIDNIGHT MADNESS: Steve's look at his favorite New Music/New Bands at 12 midnight every show.
