Episode: Connections: Dylan/Beatles in Mono Part 3 and more...

August 25, 2011 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Starts with Part 3 of an exploration of Bob Dylan and The Beatles in mono and why that matters, then goes on to a wide range of new and vintage music.

Until the late 1960's, mono mixes were the primary focus of engineers and producers. Stereo was an afterthought. In the cd era, many listeners lost sight of the amazing audio quality of mono mixes for Dylan and The Beatles. There's an intimacy and clarity to these mixes that lets you hear what the artists intended, as if you're right there in the studio with them. In some cases the differences are subtle. More warmth and presence, or better tone on the instruments. In other cases, there are guitar parts, vocals, percussion or effects that are not on the stereo mixes. This 20 minute segment explores both.

After that, music by PJ Harvey, Rickie Lee Jones, Elvis Costello, Nikki Jean, Warren Zanes, Brian Eno, The Equals, Buffalo Daughter, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Elliott Randall, The Cookies, Ivy, The Chambers Brothers, Vetiver, The Funk Brothers and more.

Also, a rarity from The Suburban Lawns. Plus a brief exploration of the connection between author David Foster Wallace, The Decemberists, Parts and Recreation television creator Michael Schur and a new video based on an imaginary game combining tennis and nuclear warfare from the brilliant and amazing novel, Infinite Jest.

And... new music by Mission 0, a great electronic/acoustic duo from CT.
