Episode: Connections: Beatles/Dylan in Mono Part 4, Warren Zanes Interview and more...

Sept 12, 2011 edition of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Includes an in depth interview with Warren Zanes. Also Part 4 of an exploration of The Beatles and Bob Dylan in mono (and why it matters), along with eclectic new and vintage music.

The show starts with a newly released live track from Rockpile, then about 20 minutes of mono recordings by Bob Dylan and The Beatles. In the 1960's, mono was the main focus of musicians, engineers and producers. Stereo was an afterthought, often mixed weeks later by second engineers. In the cd and mp3 eras, many of us got used to hearing the stereo mixes. Yet mono has an additional presence and warmth. An intimacy, as if you're right there in the studio. The balance between instruments and vocals is well thought out. Sometimes there are additional parts that are on the record, or simply more clarity to those parts.

From there, the show moves on to music by Marshall Chapman, Bo Diddley, Sam Phillips, Brian Eno, Ray Charles, Mike Viola, Nash The Slash, Tommy James & The Shondells, Jeff Barry, Alvin Robinson, Harvey Brooks, a John Lennon rarity and more.

Later, an in depth interview with the brilliant Warren Zanes. His new album, I Want To Move Out In The Daylight, is a mix of high quality songwriting and production, great feel and tremendous openness. It's gotten high praise by Aimee Mann, Tom Petty, Cameron Crowe and many others.

Starting out with The Del Fuegos as a teenager, Warren went on to earn two Masters degrees and a Ph. D., becoming a professor, writing books on Tom Petty, Dusty Springfield and others, being part of The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame as Vice President of Education and Programs, involved in documentary films (including the upcoming Martin Scorsese film on George Harrison) and so much more. He's also Executive Director of Steven Van Zandt's Rock And Roll Forever Foundation, bringing music and art to middle school and high school students in a new way.

Warren never lost sight of the music and has just released a phenomenal new album.

We talk about the album, songwriting and production, along with a wide ranging conversation about music, musicians, many of the greats of rock and roll, and why that music still lives on, influencing new generations of creative artists, listeners and music enthusiasts.

The show ends with a John Lennon rarity... his demo of She Said She Said.

Thanks to Warren for his amazing work, and for his openness and insight.

Thanks for tuning in...
