Episode: Connections: Beatles Dylan Smile in Mono Part 5 and more...

Jan 9, 2012 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Starts with Part 5 of an in depth exploration of The Beatles, Dylan and also the Smile Sessions in mono, then goes on to new and vintage music by Kendra Morris, Fiona Apple, Pete Townshend, Zaine Griff, Dum Dum Girls and much more.

Up until the late 1960's, mono was the main focus of musicians, engineers and producers. Stereo was an afterthought, often mixed weeks later. In the cd and mp3 eras, many of us got used to hearing only the stereo mixes. Yet mono has an additional presence and warmth. An intimacy, as if you're right there in the studio. Every effort was made to balance the bass, drums, guitars, vocals and effects so they would sound great on one speaker. Sometimes there are additional parts in mono, or simply more clarity to those parts.

The first hour of this show explores many of the wonderful mono mixes from Bob Dylan, The Beatles and the Smile Sessions from Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks and The Beach Boys.

Later, there's also music from Chris Isaak, Jenny O, Wayne Cochran, Still Corners, Bo Diddley, Miriam Makeba, Nash The Slash, David Bowie, Tom Waits, Marshall Chapman, Bobby Darin, Death In Vegas, Tycho, Foetus and more.

Plus a preview track from Suburban Sunshine, the debut album of a wonderful band from London, Et Tu Bruce´

Also a great track from Beki Brindle & Windopane, from the new compilation, Down That Road - From The Woodstock Vault.

Thanks for tuning in to this amazing station!
