Episode: Counterpoint with Scott Harris

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 – 9:30 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Stephen Zunes, Professor of Politics at the University of San Francisco discusses his views on the recent indictment of New Jersey U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, and evidence that suggests he passed on sensitive U.S. government information to the regime of Egyptian dictator Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, that has been accused of committing flagrant human rights abuses since El-Sisi led a military coup overthrowing the government of democratically elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

2) Raed Jarrar, Advocacy Director with the group Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) talks about the Biden administration's diplomatic initiative to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel in exchange for a Saudi-U.S. defense pact and help developing the monarchy's civilian nuclear program.

3) Thomas Starr and Jacqueline Thaw, members of the Class Action Collective talk about an upcoming protest action, "The Freedom to Read / Speak / Dissent / Is Essential to Our Democracy" in New Haven, CT -- and the current wave of rightwing censorship, book banning and attempts to sanitize the U.S. history curriculum related to slavery, racism and the Jim Crow era in schools systems across the U.S.

4) Laura Carlsen, Coordinator of Global Solidarity and Learning, with Just Associates in Mexico City, discusses the two top contenders in Mexico's June 2, 2024 presidential election: Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City of the ruling MORENA party, and Xochitl Galvez, candidate of the opposition Broad Front for Mexico coalition, and their policy platforms. She'll also assess Mexico's outgoing popular president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
