Episode: Connections: Bob Dylan 79th Birthday Special

May 21, 2020 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. It's a Bob Dylan Birthday Special with a wide variety of music from different eras. An exploration that includes alternate takes, outtakes and rarities, along with well known songs that don't get played on radio as often as they should. Some of these explorations include multiple takes and false starts from the expanded super deluxe boxed set of the Cutting Edge, showing how Bob, the musicians and the producer quickly changed and refined the songs on Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde until they became the recordings we've all known and loved for all these years. The boxed set is incredibly well mixed by my friend Steve Addabbo. It feels like you're right there in the studio!! Other songs are whatever popped into my head at the moment, including some rarities.

It's also a low key fundraiser for WPKN.

Great thanks to Bob Dylan for so many brilliant songs from so many different times, and for continually taking chances and pushing things further… for himself and all of us. Thanks to Bob and his band mates for the many live performances I've been lucky enough to have seen, enjoying both the music and his ability stay in the moment, willing to invent and reinvent himself and the music. Great thanks for Bob's humor. Thanks for simply being there!!!

Bob's work will last for many centuries. We're all lucky to have been here during this time.

Thanks to author Paul S. Williams (founder of Crawdaddy Magazine) for opening windows on ways to experience Dylan, his music and his performances. To go deeper, please seek out any of his books, especially the Bob Dylan Performing Artist series.

Additional thanks to Chris and Annette for joining me on this show and to all who enjoy listening to WPKN 89.5 on terrestrial radio, online at wpkn.org, TuneIn Radio and/or in the archives.

If you'd like, you can still donate to the station online at wpkn.org or by calling 203-331-9756 during business hours.

Note: The show was originally scheduled to be less than two hours. In a nice surprise for me, it was expanded spontaneously to about three and a half hours. It let me have additional fun, going into a number of different directions.

Thanks for tuning in!!!

Last Friday's May 15th episode is still here in archives.
