I remember a day in a kayak on a gentle river. Ahead of me is a long, jagged, broken log jutting out into the water. As I get closer, I see movement. Atop the log is a row of turtles, perhaps as many as 10. I slow my paddling. One by one, they plop gently off into the river, in a beautiful choreography.
