Episode: Connections: New Beach Boys Feel Flows box set, Charlie Watts, Rolling Stones, Dylan, Beatles plus new and vintage music

August 27, 2021 special episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks, filling in for my good friend Chris Frantz the Talking Head. It’s spontaneous!! It’s non-linear!!

A deep exploration of the new Beach Boys Feel Flows 5 cd box set, a tribute to the brilliant Charlie Watts, including music from Charlie and The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan’s Jokerman and I And I remixed for reggae by Dr Dread and a three song preview of the upcoming Beatles Let It Be / Get Back box set. And more!

By 1969-1971, the Beach Boys had fallen out of favor by some people, who could only picture the image, along with the surf songs, the car songs and the Pendleton shirts (later to be acquired at garage sales by bands from Seattle). However, the band and the people in The Beach Boys had been through many changes since the mid 60’s, just like many of us and were exploring new avenues of creativity and expression, every bit as good as their earlier work, but now going in new directions enhanced by the writing and production skills of Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Al Jardine.

The box set includes an amazing array of brilliant songs from the Sunflower and Surf’s Up sessions, including  new mixes, alternate versions, unreleased songs, backing tracks, a cappella versions, background vocals, demos, live performances, studio chatter and works in progress. Highlights from the new box set are included in three sections across the course of the show, with other music in between.

Also in several sections, a tribute to Charlie Watts, the much loved jazz drummer at the center of The Rolling Stones, who brought the roll to the Rolling Stones while keeping the steadiness and creativity that allowed them to shine. In addition to songs by The Stones, there’s also music from Charlie’s tribute to Charlie Parker, “from one charlie”.

The new Beatles releases sound fantastic! A good sign for upcoming box set in October and the new movie!!

Also in this episode, music by Sam Phillips, Tom Tom Club and Abba, along with new releases from Prince, Halsey, The Squeaky Chairs, The Afterthoughts, The Footnotes and whatever happened in the moment.

Sometimes the connections only become apparent later… even to me!

Thanks for tuning in!!!
