Episode: 08.22.16: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses Obamacare & insurance company pullout; a new report on the growing US racial wealth divide; Fight For 15 national convention in Richmond, VA & Promoting Enduring Peace Gandhi Peace Award

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Steffie Woolhandler, M.D., Professor at the City University of New York at Hunter College, examines the decision by insurance giant Aetna to pull out of Affordable Care Act program exchanges in 11 of 15 states where it operates. She'll talk about the viability of establishing a public option within the Affordable Care Act and the larger problem of for-profit medicine.

2) Dedrick Asante-Muhammad, director of the Racial Wealth Divide Initiative at the Corporation for Enterprise Development discusses his group's recent report titled, "The Ever-Growing Gap: Failing to Address the Status Quo Will Drive the Racial Wealth Divide for Centuries to Come." Among the report's findings are: If average black family wealth continues to grow at the same pace it has over the past three decades, it would take black families 228 years to amass the same amount of wealth white families have today.

3) Germaine Leggett, a 43 year old Taco Bell worker, recently laid off from his state of Connecticut job, discusses what occurred at the mid-August "Fight For 15" national convention of low wage workers in Richmond, Virginia -- and what's on the agenda for the movement during this election year.

4) Stanley Heller, administrator with Promoting Enduring Peace, executive director of the Middle East Crisis Committee and host and producer of the cable TV public affairs program, "The Struggle." He'll talk about the ongoing Syrian civil war and Saudi air war in Yemen, as well as his group's annual Gandhi Peace award, that will be given to 4-time independent presidential candidate and public citizen Ralph Nader and Omar Barghouti, a Palestinian human rights defender.
