Episode: Connections: Rolling Thunder plus new and vintage music

June 7, 2019 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. New and vintage music, along with an exploration of the newly released Bob Dylan 14 cd box set… The Rolling Thunder Review: The 1975 Live Recordings.

Wanting a change after his 1974 tour with The Band, and after releasing Blood On The Tracks, Dylan put together a touring/creative group of musicians and writers to carry out his vision in a new way. Influenced by gypsies and vaudeville shows, and a desire to take chances, they started in a small club and on the streets of NYC, with the first shows happening in small venues without much advance notice to the public. Essentially pop up Dylan.

It kept growing and changing from there.

Three of the cds are from rehearsals, where Bob works out ways to play new and older songs. Others are from the first leg of the tour in the Northeast US and Canada.

After a brief intro and a new song by Eleni Mandell, the box set is explored in different sections of today's show, mixed in with current and past music from various artists. The Dylan sections include rehearsals and live shows.

The new Rolling Thunder Review film is scheduled to be released on Netflix on June 12, with occasional screenings in theatres.

Today's episode includes new music by Rickie Lee Jones, Anna Rose, Aldous Harding, Pixx, Alan Menken (along with an early demo), a song from the new movie version of Aladdin, Eleni Mandell, Victoria George and more.

Plus a very special tribute to Dr. John.

Also The Byrds, rarities by The Beatles, The Kinks, Brian Eno, Badfinger, The Beach Boys, Elliott Randall, Caetano Veloso, Mott The Hoople, Buzzy Linhart, Mojo Mancini, Wendy Carlos, The Section Quartet, The Loop Wholes, The Squeaky Chairs and whatever happened in the moment.
