Episode: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses Nurses' demand for protective equipment & sane policies; The link between the pandemic & Fascism; Coronavirus exposes failings of US food system & Local cultural venues battle to survive the pandemic lockdown

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Deborah Berger, co-president of National Nurses United, the largest union of registered nurses in the United States and a nurse in California, and Derick Villareal, a nurse working in New York City, discuss the union's ongoing demands for adequate protections for nurses and all frontline healthcare workers, as well as offering their assessment of current federal and state policies addressing the coronavirus pandemic.

2) Jason Stanley, Jacob Urowky Professor of Philosophy at Yale University, and Federico Finchelstein, Professor of History at the New School for Social Research talk about their recent Project Syndicate article, "The Fascist Politics of the Pandemic," which is highly relevant now in view of the many irrational decisions being made by President Trump in addressing the coronavirus health crisis, and by other authoritarian leaders around the world.

3) Amanda Starbuck, Senior Food Researcher and Policy Analyst on the Food Team at Food & Water Watch, discusses the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the U.S. food system, i.e. clusters of infections in meat packing worksites, the dumping of food while thousands line up at food banks, the relevant hazards of factory farming, and how we can make structural changes to our failing food chain system.

4) Paul Mayer, Managing Member at Cafe Nine, New Haven and Hank Hoffman, Executive Director of Best Video in Hamden, CT, discuss the plight of important regional cultural institutions that have been locked down during the current health crisis. They'll talk about the economic impact they're experiencing, how they're reaching out to customers/supporters, assess how local, state and the federal government have responded to their business needs, and preparations being made for re-opening.
