Episode: Connections: Dylan's Rough and Rowdy Ways plus new and vintage music

June 19, 2020 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Featuring the new Bob Dylan album plus new and vintage music, along with some birthday celebrations for Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Harry Nilsson, Ray Davies, Todd Rundgren and Renée LoBue.

Dylan's brilliant new album, Rough and Rowdy Ways, his first of new material in eight years, sounds and feels fantastic after just a few listens. I'm looking forward to going deeper over time.

After the intro, there are several tracks from the new album, without a whole lot of commentary. It's all there in the music and the lyrics. We'll all have our own visions of what it means.

The show goes on to new and vintage music and then comes back to more of the new album roughly half way through, with one more exquisite Dylan song near the end. To my ears, it's a brilliant album on multiple levels, breaking new ground and visiting times, people and music from different eras, while staying in the present and leading a way to the future. The lyrics touch on musicians and writers and public figures and bands and song titles, while also going into areas that are not easy to define. The production is fantastic. Very warm and in the moment. The band is very intimate and responsive. Bob's singing breaks new ground. And throughout the album, there's wonderful humor from Dylan.

These are just words. The music speaks for itself.

The show also has new music from Elvis Costello, Nicole Atkins, Jenny O., JD McPherson, Louise Goffin, Tone-Cluster (a new project from musician, arranger and producer Eric Gorfain, founder of The Section Quartet), Flowers of America, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Spooky Ghost (a project by Gerry Leonard), Christine and The Queens, Marshall Chapman and more.

Plus Bo Diddley, Leon Russell, Paul McCartney, Jenny Lewis, The Beach Boys, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Nilsson, Nazz, Vera Lynn, Todd Rundgren, The Squeaky Chairs, Pi in the Sky and whatever happened in the moment.

Thanks for tuning in!!
