Episode: 08.01.22 Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses a new Senate bill that requires Medicare to negotiate some drug prices & imposes a corporate minimum tax; Why the Feds increase in interest rates won't decrease inflation;I Wage Peace service event Aug 7th

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 – 9:30 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Steve Knievel, Advocate with Public Citizen’s Access to Medicines Program assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the latest proposed legislation on health care reform Senate Democrats negotiated with West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin. He'll focus on several issues including: requiring Medicare to negotiate the price of a limited number of prescription drugs (not insulin) with pharmaceutical companies; expansion of eligibility for the Medicare Part D low-income subsidy, and the effort now underway by Senate Republicans and Big Pharma to defeat this modest bill.

2) Maura Quint, Wealth Tax Campaign Director with Americans For Tax Fairness talks about her group's new report, "Growing & Dangerous Trend of Billionaires Buying Elections," as well as assessing the deal negotiated with Sen. Joe Manchin to pass legislation that includes a new 15% minimum tax on big corporations, and closing the so-called carried interest loophole that benefits Wall Street's wealthy hedge fund managers.

3) Ellen Brown, founder of the Public Banking Institute and the author of a dozen books, including the best-selling "Web of Debt," discusses her recent article, "Interest Rate Hikes Will Not Save Us From Inflation," the current direction of the U.S. economy, and the progress being made across the U.S. to establish public banks at the local and state level.

4) Bruce Barrett, founder of I Wage Peace and president, Barrett Outdoor Communications Inc., talks about his group's "Serve, Pray, Heal Interfaith Service Day," Sunday August 7, 2022 in New Haven, CT, which brings together Jewish, Muslim, and Christian youth from Israel for a day of community service. Seventeen faith organizations are participating in the event, where volunteers will work on seven area service projects.
