Episode: 08.28.23: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses New report on widening gap between CEO and worker pay; Confronting GOP's embrace of political violence; Guatemala elects anti-corruption activist; CT rallies opposition to health insurance rate hike

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 – 9:30 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Sarah Anderson, Director of the Institute for Policy Studies' Global Economy Project, discusses her new IPS report, "Executive Excess 2023" which finds "the ‘Low-Wage 100’ large corporations have spent more than $340 billion on stock buybacks since 2020," at the same time that many corporate leaders routinely insist they simply lack the resources to raise employee pay.

2) Peter Montgomery, Managing Director of People For The American Way's Right Wing Watch, examines the Republican Party's embrace of political violence as seen in the rise of lone wolf attacks on GOP targeted groups, Trump's threats against judges, prosecutors and witnesses in his 4 criminal cases -- as well as the silence of most GOP politicians who refuse to condemn the incitement to violence often heard from Trump and many of his supporters.

3) Allan Nairn, award-winning investigative journalist whose writing has focused on the dark side of U.S. foreign policy, talks about the landslide victory of Guatemalan presidential candidate Bernardo Arévalo in the nation's August 20th election -- and the danger ahead for him, given the nation's long history of brutal violence and mass murder that Allan has long documented, including his recent article, "Guatemala Before the Election."

4) Liz Dupont-Diehl, Associate Director of the Connecticut Citizen Action Group, CCAG, discusses the recent Insurance Department forum on requested double-digit rate hikes by health insurance companies "who, as CCAG revealed, spent more than $400 BILLION on CEO pay, profits and stock buybacks in 2022 ALONE." She'll also talk about CT's Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) recent decision to deny United Illuminating's electricity rate hike request.
