Episode: 01.18.16: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses the Democratic candidate's debate on single payer health care; Excerpt of MLK Jr. speech on, "The Other America," Black Lives Matter protests on MLK holiday weekend & GE's move from CT to Boston/taxation

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Dr. Robert Zarr, president of Physicians for a National Health Program and a board-certified pediatrician at Unity Health Care in Washington, D.C., discusses the recent debate between Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders on Sander's advocacy of establishing a single-payer universal health care plan in the U.S. Dr. Zarr will examine the single payer plans Senator Sanders has proposed in the context of similar existing health care systems in virtually all other industrial nations around the world -- and compare the benefits of the current Obama Care/ACA program with single payer/Medicare for All.

2) Excerpt of speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., titled, "The Other America," delivered at Stanford University, California on April 14, 1967.

3) Michelle Higgins, Director, Faith With Justice & Organization for Black Struggle talks about the nationwide "Reclaim MLK" protest actions that were organized for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, January 15-18th, and the movement's three central demands: 1) Divest from racist systems & invest in black communities; 2) Community control; 3) Alternative institutions.

4) Tom Swan, executive director of the Connecticut Citizen Action Group, discusses General Electric's announcement that they'll be moving their Headquarters from Fairfield, CT to Boston, Mass. He'll examine GE's history of tax avoidance, corporate efforts to extort tax breaks and pit states against one another -- and more general issues related to corporate tax policy and jobs.
