Episode: 07.19.21: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses Senate Negotiations on Medicare Expansion; US response to Cuban protests; CT forum on land use, climate & equity; "Creating a New Moral Political Economy"

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Alex Lawson, Executive Director of Social Security Works talks about the exciting developments re: the proposed expansion of Medicare and Medicaid in infrastructure legislation now being negotiated in the U.S. Senate.

2) James Early, the former Director of Cultural Studies and Communication at the Center for Folklife Programs and Cultural Studies at the Smithsonian Institution, discusses recent protests in Cuba and the response here in the U.S. from both politicians and the corporate news media.

3) Mitch Linck, an organizer with CT Climate Crisis Mobilization (C3M) will talk about his group's upcoming Zoom Forum on Land Use, Climate and Equity. The event will feature speakers from a variety of perspectives on the topic: an agro-ecologist; a pro-forestation expert; an urban planner/forester; a speaker to address exclusionary zoning and an indigenous speaker to address their perspective on land use, land back and respect for their treaties.

4) Margaret Levi, Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University discusses her group's project, “Creating a New Moral Political Economy,” which emerged from the recognition that the current political economic framework is fraying and seeks to build a new one: an endeavor made more critical by COVID-19, the racial justice movement, and increased political polarization across the globe.
