Episode: 11.27.23: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses the 8th Circuit Court ruling eroding the Voting Rights Act; Activists push for Permanent Ceasefire in Gaza; Biden's dismal polls alarm those working to defeat Trump in 24'; CCAG's 52nd Anniversary

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 – 9:30 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Nicholas Stephanopoulos, Kirkland & Ellis Professor of Law at Harvard University and Holly Dickson, Executive Director of the ACLU of Arkansas, examine the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that private individuals and groups such as the NAACP do not have the right to sue under a key section of the federal Voting Rights Act, a decision that contradicts decades of precedent and will likely further erode protections under the VRA, already gutted by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2013.

2) Hassan El-Tayyab, Legislative Director for Middle East Policy and Advocacy Organizer with Friends Committee on National Legislation discusses the future of the temporary "humanitarian pause" in Gaza, his group's work advocating for a return of all the hostages, unfettered aid access, and a permanent ceasefire -- as well as the urgent need to begin negotiations on reaching a just and lasting peace for all Israelis and Palestinians.

3) Jeff Cohen, Co-Founder and Policy Director of RootsAction.org, is a media critic, columnist, documentary filmmaker, retired journalism professor and founder of the media watch group FAIR. He'll discuss Roots Action's Step Aside Joe campaign, amid rising anger at Pres. Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas War, and growing concern about his sliding poll numbers and ability to defeat Donald Trump, who's now running on an openly fascist campaign platform.

4) Tom Swan, Executive Director of the Connecticut Citizen Action Group talks about CCAG current campaigns including: the recent release of a scorecard re: insurance companies underwriting of fossil fuel companies exacerbating the climate crisis; the CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP's) proposal for new vehicle emissions standards, and the disinformation being spread about the proposal by legislators and their corporate allies, and CCAG's upcoming 52nd Anniversary and Awards Celebration on Thursday, Dec. 7th in West Hartford, CT.
