Episode: 01.22.24: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses Israel's Bloody ongoing war in Gaza; White Christian Nationalists Embrace of Trump; Supreme Court Poised to Gut Federal Regulations; 3 Migrants Drowned as Texas Tries to Enforce its own Border Rules

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 – 9:30 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Michael Lynk, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, and former U.N. Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territories from 2016 to 2022, examines the ongoing mass death and suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, the failure of the U.S., UK and Germany to call for a ceasefire, and the South African case now before the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

2) Bradley Onishi is a former White Christian nationalist, now a scholar of religion and author of the book, “Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism—and What Comes Next.” Dr. Onishi, an adjunct professor at the University of San Francisco and cohost of the Straight White American Jesus podcast, discusses Donald Trump and the Republican Party's continued embrace of white Christian Nationalism, underscored by Trump's recent post of a video on his social media page where he proclaims himself to be God’s chosen emissary on Earth – sent to deliver America back to prosperity.

3) Tishan Weerasooriya, Senior Associate of Policy and Political Affairs with the group Stand Up America, discusses the issues the Supreme Court heard last week re: the Chevron doctrine, in the cases -- Loper Bright v. Raimondo and Relentless Inc. v. Department of Commerce. If as expected the extremist conservative Supreme Court majority overturns the Chevron doctrine, that ruling will effectively gut federal agencies' ability to set and enforce regulations—a potentially massive blow to the climate, civil rights, public health, and more.

4) Julianne McShane, Mother Jones magazine's news and engagement writer, focusing on daily news coverage and stories at the intersection of gender and inequity, discusses the issues examined in her recent article, "Three Migrants Drowned After Texas’ Attempt to Seize Control of the Border," as well as the ongoing flood of refugees at the US-Mexico border, and Congressional budget negotiations where immigration reform proposals are reportedly under consideration.
