Episode: Connections: Bob Dylan's Trouble No More, plus new and vintage music

Nov 3, 2017 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Exploring Bob Dylan's new deluxe edition of the Bootleg Series, Volume 13: Trouble No More (1979-1981), plus new and vintage music.

Dylan's new box set sounds fantastic. It combines outtakes, live performances, rehearsals and sound checks from a period of time when Bob was writing spiritual music and going in a new direction, very influenced by the bible, combining the power of gospel singing with rock and roll and his own visionary music.

The first hour of the show goes deep into the newly released 8 cd box set. The vitality of Bob's performances, along with the power of his band and the background singers is astonishing and incredible. In retrospect, it's hard to understand why a portion of Bob's own audience didn't appreciate what he was doing at the time. But as when he first started playing electric guitar, it took a while for some people to get it… and accept change as an essential part of his art.

Luckily, the studio and live performances were well recorded and beautifully remixed. Many of these songs have never been released.

The show continues with music by The Beatles, The Kinks, ELO, Steve Addabbo (who mixed the new Dylan box set, as well as earlier releases in The Bootleg Series), Sam Phillips, Holly Miranda, Lee Michaels, Sam & Dave, T-Rex, Los Straightjackets covering Nick Lowe, Jeanne & The Darlings, The Funk Brothers and Cindy Lee Berryhill.

Also new music by Sunflower Bean, Ken Ramm of Euphoria, Slowdive, Destroyer, Pink, The Squeaky Chairs and whatever happened in the moment.

Thanks for tuning in!
