Episode: 12.10.18: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses the unsanitized history of the late G.H.W. Bush; Fossil fuel & debt protest at Yale; RIP Medical Debt project & AMLO Mexico's new progressive President

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Arun Gupta an independent journalist who has written for dozens of publications including the Washington Post, the Nation and the Guardian -- and author of the book, "Bacon as a Weapon of Mass Destruction: A Junk-Food-Loving Chef’s Inquiry into Taste." Gupta examines the reality of the late President H.W. Bush's record in office vs. the sanitized corporate media version of his tenure as president... as well as the history of William Barr, Donald Trump's nominee for Attorney General.

2) Mary Claire Whelan of Fossil Free Yale and Bibiana Torres of Despierta Boricua discuss their group's recent protest action demanding that Yale University "cancel their holdings in Puerto Rico’s debt and divests from fossil fuels," resulting in 48 arrests of students and community members for their participation in non-violent civil disobedience.

3) Jerry Ashton, co-author, along with Robert Goff and Craig Antico of the book, "End Medical Debt: Curing America's $1 Trillion Unpayable Healthcare Debt," talks about his tax-exempt charity that locates, buys and forgives medical debt. The project first came to America's attention in 2016 when HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" used the charity to abolish $15 million in medical debt.

4) Laura Carlsen, Director of the Americas Program at the Center for International Policy, talks about her recent article, "AMLO's Inauguration and the Future of Mexico," chronicling the beginning of the new administration of Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico's first leftist president to be sworn into office in 70 years.
