Episode: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses the new U.S.-Russia nuclear arms race; Bernie Sanders' groundbreaking workplace democracy proposal; Move to establish domestic terrorism statute open to FBI abuse & The fires burning down the Amazon rainforest
Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org
1) Jeff Carter, Executive Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility, talks about the dangers inherent in the revival of a U.S.- Russia nuclear arms race, with the U.S. withdrawal from the 1987 INF Treaty, followed by the recent Pentagon test of a once-prohibited intermediate range missile and reports of a deadly accident related to Russian testing of a new nuclear powered cruise missile. He'll also talk about his group's advocacy for passage of a "No First Use" policy on nuclear weapons.
2) Barry Eidlin, Assistant Professor of Sociology at McGill University discusses his recent Jacobin magazine article, "Bernie's Plan for Workplace Democracy Is the Boldest Presidential Plan for Worker's Rights Ever," and the current state of the U.S. labor movement.
3) Chip Gibbons, Policy and Legislative Counsel Defending Rights and Dissent discuss the threat of white supremacist violence and right wing domestic terrorism, and your group's concern that establishing a "domestic terrorism" statute, could be abused -- and turned against lawful organizations both on the right and left. We can review the powers the FBI currently has to investigate and prosecute individuals and groups that advocate and practice violence.
4) Moira Birss, Campaign Director, Finance Program with Amazon Watch, will talk about her group's response to the unprecedented number of fires that have been set in the Amazon rain forest, the role of Brazilian President Bolsonaro in repealing and/or weakening environmental protections -- and what the international community can do to limit the damage to the environment and climate.
