Episode: 04.13.20: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses massive unemployment leading to loss of health insurance; Racial disparity in COVID-19 deaths; Bernie Sanders progressive legacy; Calls for COVID-19 debt cancellation for poorest nations

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Steffie Woolhandler, M.D., M.P.H, distinguished professor of public health and health policy in the CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College and co-founder Physicians for a National Health Program. Dr. Woolhandler will examine a recent study that finds that layoffs resulting from the coronavirus lockdown have caused nearly 5 million workers in the U.S. to lose their employer based health insurance, with estimates that as many as 13.5 million will lose their health insurance coverage by the end of June. She'll discuss ways in which the current crisis has created momentum to move the U.S. to a universal, single payer health system.

2) Dr. Sharrelle Barber, national adviser and coordinator to the Poor People's Campaign's COVID-19 Health Justice Advisory Committee, is a faculty member at Drexel University's Dornslife School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr. Barber will discuss growing concern about data that finds the number of people dying form the coronavirus are disproportionately from communities of color - and the action your group is advocating.

3) Luke Savage, Staff Writer with Jacobin Magazine, discusses his recent article, "Bernie Lost. But His Legacy Will Only Grow, " and the challenges in the critical year ahead for the progressive movement that Bernie inspired both in the November 2020 election and beyond.

4) Jubilee USA's Executive Director Eric LeCompte discusses plans he's proposed to Pope Francis, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and G20 group of nations re: the COVID-19 pandemic and the urgent need to cancel debt payments for the 76 poorest countries in the world and provide aid for countries that need it.
