Episode: Connections: New box sets by John Lennon Plastic Ono Band and The Who Sell Out plus new and vintage music

April 23, 2021 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. It’s spontaneous! It’s non-linear!! A deep exploration of new box sets by John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band and The Who Sell Out, including rarities, demos, alternate takes, backing tracks, new mixes and insight on being in the studio while music was created.

Also Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Todd Rundgren (with some rare promo spots), Kimm Rogers, Suburban Lawns, Op8 featuring Lisa Germano, Jenny O. and more.

Plus new music by Liz Phair, Merry Clayton, Simone Istwa (extraordinarily talented daughter of Sam Phillips and T Bone Burnett), Lucy Dacus, Weezer, Beabadoobie, The Squeaky Chairs, Further Adieu and whatever happened in the moment.

The John Lennon and The Who box sets had just been released on Friday and I so enjoyed exploring some of these tracks live on air. There’s so much to be learned from Pete Townshend home demos and how his guitar playing set the tone for how Keith Moon would play drums and John Entwistle would play bass and how Pete’s singing and compositional skills would inspire Roger Daltrey to take these songs to another level. Plus backing tracks and alternate versions!!

John Lennon’s humor and openness in the studio with his friends Ringo Starr and Klaus Voorman and their relaxed nature and mutual love of spontaneously playing oldies allowed John to be confident in exploring new songs and a new, revolutionary style in his first album after that other band he was in.

There will be more from each of these box sets in future episodes of Connections.

Also, in the early parts of the show, there was electronic music from Tonto’s Expanding Headband (with the late, great Malcolm Cecil and Bob Margoleuff) and electronic music pioneer Laurie Spiegel, who is featured in the new documentary Sister With Transistors, along with Suzanne Ciani, Laurie Anderson and others. This part of the show will be available in separate archives on the WPKN website.

Thanks for tuning in!!!

Last week’s episode, featuring Bob Dylan with George Harrison in newly released studio outtakes from 1970, plus Beatles, Stones, Dusty, Spoonful, Nazz, Sam Phillips, Nick Lowe and Jenny Lewis along with new releases from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Prince, Daniel Lanois, Liz Phair and more is also available in archives at:
