Episode: Connections: The Kinks Village Green Revisited plus new and vintage music

Oct 26, 2018 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks filling in for my good friend Chris Frantz the Talking Head. New and vintage music, plus a deep exploration of previously unreleased tracks from the new box set of The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society.

Includes new releases by Roseanne Cash, Sam Phillips, Elvis Costello, Azure Ray, Emily Duff, Harriet Stubbs & Marianne Faithfull, Peter Holsapple with Alex Chilton, Peter Gregson, Jeff Rona, Kurt Vile, Farao and The Besnard Lakes.

Also Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Maggie & Suzzy Roche covering Buzzy Linhart, Goldfrapp, Sandy Nelson, Tony Joe White, PJ Harvey, Dick Dale, Paul Simon, The Beach Boys, Eddie Floyd, Soccer Mommy, Subtle References, The Squeaky Chairs and whatever happened in the moment.

The 1968 Village Green album by The Kinks has passed the test of time very well, especially for an album that didn't get as much notice as it should have upon release. The music, the sound, the production, the lyrics and the subject matter of the songs were unique to the writing and observations of the 24 year old Ray Davies. And one of the reasons the album holds up so well may be in the details. The songs are well constructed, with memorable melodies. The lyrics pinpoint people and situations. We've all visited the village green and know those people… whether we were there or not.

The previously unreleased mixes, outtakes, demos and backing tracks by The Kinks start about 29 minutes into the show, and reappear a second time about an hour and forty minutes in.

Hats off to Andrew Sandoval for his amazing and loving work on the box set.

High respect to Ray Davies, Dave Davies, Pete Quaife and Mick Avory of The Kinks for creating such spectacular work and to Kinks fans everywhere.

Thanks for tuning in!
