Episode: Connections: Dylan On The Tracks plus new and vintage music

Nov 2, 2018 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Exploring the new Bob Dylan box set: More Blood, More Tracks, The Bootleg Series Vol. 14, plus new and vintage music.

Includes newly released music by Bob Dylan, John Lennon, The Beatles, Roseanne Cash, Sam Phillips, Emily Duff, Mike Viola, Middle Kids, Cat Power, The Bookends, Marianne Faithfull, Metric, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Maria Muldaur, Mary Hopkin and more.

Also Bo Diddley, Iggy Pop with David Bowie, Joe South, Traveling Wilburys, Leon Russell, George Harrison, The Champs, Kelley Ryan, The Squeaky Chairs, Dead Pixels and whatever happened in the moment.

In various sections, much of the show goes deep in revisiting Bob Dylan's brilliant 1974 album, Blood On The Tracks. It was recorded in only 5 days of lengthy and spontaneous sessions, starting in New York and ending in Minnesota, after Bob decided to change several songs in what what would have been a very different release. The first day of tracking in September 1974, was entirely a solo effort by Bob, on acoustic guitar, vocal and harmonica. In other circumstances, that might have been the whole album. But over the next few days, various session musicians were added and subtracted, with ever changing versions of these new songs. In late December 1974, the Minnesota recordings took place with an entirely different set of musicians over the course of two days. Five of those songs ended up of the original release of Blood On The Tracks.

In this episode of Connections, the new Dylan releases are spread out over several sets, starting about 17 minutes in and continuing throughout the show. New and vintage music, sometimes with connections to Bob, takes place spontaneously throughout the show.

To me, it's fascination to hear how in the moment Bob was for each song and each take. And how fluid he was in quickly revising the feel and the lyrics and the music in any song at any point. His vocals are wonderful. And his humor comes through, such as a moment on Meet Me In The Morning, when he's asked to play slide guitar.

Courtesy of producer, engineer, musician and songwriter Steve Addabbo's clear and sensitive mixes of this material, the performances seem so intimate, it feels like you're there in the studio.

If all goes according to plan, Steve will be joining me on the Nov 16 episode of Connections, as we explore this box set, his work on The Cutting Edge and other official Dylan boxes, his work as a producer and many other things, much further.

Great thanks to Bob Dylan, the musicians, engineers and producers on the original tracks, and to Steve Addabbo, Jeff Slate (who wrote the liner notes), and everyone involved in putting together this amazing box set, with rare photos, Dylan's handwritten lyrics, memorabilia and detailed notes on every session of this extraordinary work!

Thanks for tuning in!
