Episode: Connections: Rolling Stones in mono, Bowie, Lennon, Dylan, new and vintage music

Oct 7, 2016 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. New and vintage music. Rolling Stones in mono. New Bowie release. John Lennon birthday tribute. Beatles, Nilsson, Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley and much more.

As with The Beatles, Dylan, The Beach Boys and many others who created music in the 1960's, mono mixes are where the artists, producers and engineers put their energy, care and creativity, making every effort to get the balance of instruments and vocals, and most importantly, the feel, just right. Stereo was often seen as a gimmick, an afterthought, sometimes done very quickly and without much care, sometimes weeks later, without direct input from the artist or the producer.

There's a new box set of The Rolling Stones in mono, including UK and US versions of albums from the beginning through Between The Buttons and on to Let It Bleed… plus extras including singles, b-sides and alternate mono mixes for singles. Sometimes those include added parts, completely different echo on the vocals and an entirely different sound than we've been hearing on cd or vinyl since the 60's. To me, the sound on many of the mono mixes feels fuller, maybe even closer to what it may had been like to be in the studio while recording. The bass and the guitars jump out nicely. It feels like a band!

Throughout the show, there are about 9 songs by The Stones, all in mono. There are also mono versions of songs by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys and The Blues Magoos.

Early in the show are newly released versions of David Bowie songs, including the just released Gouster album (an earlier version of Young Americans, produced by Tony Visconti). For the first time, the Gouster album is featured in a new box set.

Also rare Bo Diddley, Elliott Randall, Sam Phillips, Harry Nilsson, Margo Guryan, The Shangri-Las and John Lennon (including a rare demo).

Plus new music from Euphoria, Tycho, Christine and The Queens, Agnes Obel, D D Dumbo, Warpaint, Daphne Guinness, Trentemoller, The Lagoons, Guilty of Love, La Femme, Mike Raphone of The Squeaky Chairs and whatever happened in the moment.

Thanks for tuning in!
